Simon West's 'Con Air' has aged well. When I saw it for the first time, almost a decade ago, I loved it, and now, whenever I end up watching it, I just get more & more involved. John Malkovich is ruthless, while Steve Buscemi never disappoints. Ving Rhames is first-rate. Nick Chinlund is passable. Colm Meaney & M. C. Gainey are adequate.<br/><br/>On the whole, 'Con Air' is One Cinematic Experience!
I just finished watching this film for the first time on Sky Movies. Okay this film does sound a little cheesy when you first hear about it but this film is one of the most heart pounding action film ever made. A whole gang of extremely dangerous convicts hijack an aeroplane being used to transport them to another prison. Nicolas Cage plays Cameron Poe, a now ex-convict ready to meet his daughter for the first time in his life but finds himself caught up in this nightmare with wings. I've always thought Cage is a fantastic actor but he hasn't had that many good films to show that. He is fantastic in this film although the redneck accent he puts on is annoying at first. John Malkovich; well there you're only getting better. I am a big fan of him especially in his roleLennie in Of Mice & Men. He maintains the psychopathic mentality he has in most of his other filmsCyrus 'The Virus' Grissom, the deadliest convict on the flight.<br/><br/>I won't tell you anymore because you have to see this film for yourself. So go on… see it, see it, SEE IT!
This is a movie that knows it is absurd, and does little to deny it.
During the fight, Billy-Joe pulls a switch-blade on Cameron. Cameron responds by striking Billy-Joe in the nose, causing him to die from blunt-force trauma to the head. When Billy-Joe's friends flee the scene, one of them grabs the switch-blade off the ground. Therefore making a self-defence case difficult to prove. As the only witness Cameron had was his wife Trisha and even she ran off to get Dale the bartender before Billy-Joe pulled the knife, therefore she didn't witness what happened.<br/><br/>During his trial, Cameron refused to plead guilty. However, his lawyer gives him poor advice, stating that he risked getting 10 years if the case went to trial and he lost. But by admitting to it, he'd only get 4 years and serve maybe a year for good behaviour. For whatever reason, this wasn't a plea deal, but lawyer's advice. So when he plead guilty, the judge seemingly decided to make an example out of Cameron, believing that Cameron, being a former Army Ranger didn't think the normal rules of society applied to him and that he is trained to respond with deadly force, therefore making him a danger to society and therefore gave him a sentence of 7-10 years.
